चक्रीवादळांना कशा प्रकारे नावे दिली जातात?

 

                तौक्ते, फियान, कॅट्रिना, रिटा, विल्मा, अशी चक्रीवादळांची नावे ऐकली की तीच नावे का व कुणी निवडली असा प्रश्न उभा राहतो. चक्रीवादळाला काहीतरी नाव असायला हवे यात संशय नाही. कारण विशिष्ट चक्रीवादळ दिनांकापेक्षा नावाने लक्षात ठेवणे सोपे आहे. उदाहरणार्थ, २९ ऑगस्ट २००५ रोजी एका चक्रीवादळाने न्यू ऑर्लिआन्स हे शहर पाण्याखाली पार बुडवून टाकले होते. एकूण १०० अब्ज डॉलर्सचे नुकसान झाले. त्या चक्रीवादळाचे कॅट्रिना हे नाव सहज लक्षात राहते. एकाच वेळी अनेक चक्रीवादळे उद्भवली तर प्रत्येकाचा नावाने निर्देश करणे उपयुक्त ठरते. मात्र कोणत्याही चक्रीवादळाने ताशी ११९ किलोमीटरची मर्यादा ओलांडल्याशिवाय त्याला नाव मिळत नाही.

                   चक्रीवादळांना नावे देण्याची प्रथा तशी जुनी आहे. वेस्ट इंडिजमध्ये चक्रीवादळांना संतांची नावे देण्याची पद्धत होती. प्युएर्टो रिको या देशाला १३ सप्टेंबर १८७६ रोजी एका चक्रीवादळाने तडाखा दिला होता. त्याला हरिकेन सेंट फिलिप असे नाव देण्यात आले होते. त्यानंतर १९२८ साली त्याच दिवशी त्याच देशावर चक्रीवादळाने चाल केली. त्याला नाव देण्यात आले 'हरिकेन सेंट फिलिप सेकंड'..

 

                    १९४० च्या दशकात हवामानशास्त्रज्ञांनी प्रत्येक चक्रीवादळाला नाव देण्याची प्रथा सुरू केली. प्रारंभी एबल, बेकर, चार्ली, डॉग, इझी, फॉक्स वगैरे नावे दिली जात. ती.. अर्थातच ए, बी, सी, डी, वगैरे इंग्रजी मुळाक्षरांच्या क्रमानुसार असत. त्यामुळे प्रत्येक वर्षात एक एबल, एक बेकर अशी नावे असत. दुसऱ्या युद्धानंतर १९४७ सालापासून हवामानशास्त्रज्ञांनी मुळाक्षरांनुसार चक्रीवादळांसाठी स्त्रियांच्या नावाची यादी प्रसिद्ध करायला सुरुवात केली. ही यादी अनेक चक्रीवादळांच्या मोसमासाठी चालत असे. १९७० च्या दशकात या पद्धतीतही बदल करण्यात आला आणि चक्रीवादळांना आलटून पालटून पुरुषांची व स्त्रियांची नावे देण्यात येऊ लागली. मोसमातील पहिल्या चक्रीवादळाचे नाव 'ए' या अक्षरापासून, दुसऱ्याचे 'बी' या अक्षरापासून अशी नावे देण्यात येऊ लागली. अॅटलांटिक व पॅसिफिक महासागरांसाठी नावांचे दोन वेगळे संच अगोदरच घोषित करण्यात येऊ लागले. उदाहरणार्थ, २००१ सालातील पॅसिफिक महासागरातील पहिल्या चक्रीवादळाचे नाव होते 'अॅडॉल्फ,' तर त्या वर्षीच्या अॅटलांटिक महासागरातील पहिल्या चक्रीवादळाचे नावे होते 'अॅलिसन'.

 

                         एखादे चक्रीवादळ कायमचे लक्षात राहते, कारण ते प्रचंड नुकसान करून जाते. अशा चक्रीवादळाचे नाव यादीमधून 'निवृत्त' करण्यात येते.

त्यासाठी 'वर्ल्ड मेटिऑरॉलॉजिकल ऑर्गनायझेशन'ची मान्यता घ्यावी लागते. असे नाव किमान १० वर्षे पुन्हा वापरले जात नाही. याचे कारण त्या काळात नुकसानभरपाई, विम्याची पूर्तता, कायदेशीर गोष्टी पुऱ्या करता येतात. निवृत्त केलेल्या चक्रीवादळांच्या नावात अॅन्ड्र्यू (१९९२), डायना (१९९०), ह्युगो (१९८९) आणि गिल्बर्ट (१९८८) ही नावे सुप्रसिद्ध आहेत.

Of course A, B, C, D, etc. were in the order of the English alphabet. So every year there were names like Abel, Baker. After World War II, meteorologists began publishing alphabetically named women for hurricanes in 1947. The list goes on for several hurricane seasons.                          A hurricane is remembered forever, because it causes huge damage. The name of such a hurricane is 'retired' from the list. This requires the approval of the World Meteorological Organization. Such a name has not been used for at least 10 years.
